In the Spotlight - Pre Prep PE
Posted on: 6th Feb 2024
Although the weather has gotten remarkably colder this has not ‘frozen’ our spirits! We continue on as before, offering a new collection of sporting opportunities for our pupils within the Spring Term.
Our Pre-Prep PE lessons continue to embed our class rules and expected behaviour and routines but at the same time, allowing for greater independence and an increased focus on two and three part step instructions which helps develop and prepare pupils for the move from Foundation 1 into Foundation 2.
For Foundation 2 the Spring term focuses on gymnastic based shapes, movements and routines. We spend time understanding how to control our bodies whilst using more adventurous and larger pieces of apparatus, and investigate ways in which our body feels and looks, whilst both in a tense or relaxed state.
As we move into Year one and two the groundwork begins for our more dynamic gymnastic based movements. There are roughly 9 basic shapes in gymnastics that if practised and replicated to its true form, eventually become the basis of more extensive movements in gymnastics.
For example the ‘dish’ or ‘arch’ are one of the prerequisites to the backflip or somersault. One of the reasons why I spend a lot of time working on these movements in Year 1 and 2 is to help give the pupils a solid grounding in these gymnastic shapes. By doing so, it aids in the pupils' progression onto more advanced skills which they can replicate with a greater understanding of what their bodies can do as a result.
