In the Spotlight - Year 6 Art

Posted on: 6th Feb 2024

Year 6 has been studying hands, drawing inspiration from Rodin. Auguste Rodin almost obsessively explored the expressive power of hands, using them to convey an infinite variety of emotions and experiences.

Using alginate, a fast-setting material often used by dentists to take impressions, the children created plaster casts of their hands. The children had under two minutes to mix and pour their alginate into their moulds before plunging their hands into the mixture, holding their hands in their chosen pose before the alginate set. Once casting plaster had been poured into the moulds and set, the children had the task of carefully tearing off the parts of their moulds to reveal their sculptures inside. Particular care had to be taken when removing the alginate from around the fingers as they can easily break.

This was an ambitious project for children of primary school age. The results look astounding.
