English - Reading

Every week the children have the opportunity to visit the school library to take out and return a book. They really enjoy visiting the library with Mrs Fox and they often strive to be the ‘Reader of the Week’, which is a very sought after position to have. The prize for this is to sit inside one of the small tents and read with a friend.

We love reading in the library and we have taken the opportunity to start reading our newest class reader, ‘Varjak Paw’ by S F Said, in there. Some of the children already know this book and they have been excited to tell the others about it, saying what a good read it is. We try to read as many books together as we can so that we have a shared experience and we can discuss vocabulary and listen to each other read aloud, which is not an easy skill, particularly when trying to use different voices and lots of expression.

Our top 5 book recommendations are:

  • Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

  • Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz

  • A study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle

  • The Night Bus Hero by Onjali Q. Rauf

  • The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Rauf
