Thrones (almost!) fit for a King!

 

This year was always going to be a busy time with Woodford Green Prep’s 90th anniversary celebrations. However, with the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth and accession of King Charles, the opportunities to learn about national as well as local history were fully embraced by our pupils. Trips to historical sites, such as The Tower of London, the studying of archives or discussing the meaning of monarchy are just some of the learning activities undertaken.

In keeping with King Charles’ ethos of recycling unused items to support the natural world, cupboards and garages were scoured to source old and unused chairs, for repurposing into thrones fit for a modern monarch.  Everyone, from the Headmaster, administrative staff, school nurse to all classes, enjoyed researching the historical significance, roles, styles of thrones through the ages and society. Everyone avidly applied design and technology skills in anticipation of presenting their throne creations during our celebration picnic. The end result was a magnificent array of thrones, celebrating sustainability, the environment and community. And, despite the best attempts of the rain (a somewhat British tradition), everything proceeded as planned.

When the clouds parted and with the sunshine restored, everyone joined in to sing not only the National Anthem, but also a ‘happy 90th birthday’ for our 90th year. The pupils’ decorations looked spectacular and, as ever, there was a great sense of community spirit.

During our anniversary year it has been wonderful that so many former pupils, ‘Old Reds’, have been in contact. Our community of today builds upon what has gone before and we at WGPS are always happy to hear from past pupils.
