Reading Buddies

Most children enjoy reading, but there is nothing like having someone else to read to, especially if it’s reading a book you know and love yourself. This is exactly what the children are doing when we hold our Reading Buddies sessions. The older children are paired with the younger children and they take a reading book with them to share with one another. Sometimes it can be talking about the pictures in the book and other times it might be reading parts of the book together.

It has been such a pleasure watching some of these sessions take place at WGPS and the joy that every child gets from reading together. We hope that this will instil a love of reading and encourage more reluctant readers to pick up a book more often than they otherwise would. The sessions have definitely shown that reluctant readers are more confident when reading to a younger child and it gives them a sense of great satisfaction when the listener has thanked them for sharing their well loved book.

Reading and writing go hand in hand, therefore we hope that these sessions will help to develop a more fluent reading and writing style, maybe by stealing an idea they have heard or using a character from a book to enhance their own writing.

We will be running these sessions throughout the year and we hope that they will continue to grow each child’s love of reading.
