Hatching Eggs

Posted on: 20th May 2024

In keeping with the theme of life cycles, F1 have been experiencing hatching chicks as an introduction to caring for animals this week.

On Wednesday morning, teachers and children witnessed the hatching of our first chick and we enjoyed celebrating its arrival! The children noticed small cracks and holes on the egg shell and we talked about how the chick needed to use its egg tooth to first peck a hole and then crack the egg open. We heard clear peeping sounds as the chick emerged and we discussed the importance of the incubator for keeping the chicks dry and fluffy.

Next week, we will transfer the chicks to the brooder box and ensure that they have enough food, water, bedding (straw) and warmth (heat lamp). We also plan to interact with the chicks more closely; giving the children an opportunity to hold them gently, make observational drawings and maybe even name them.

So far, our list of suggested names include ‘Fluffy,’ ‘Sweetie’ and ‘Popcorn!’

A week on, the chicks are thriving and have been enjoyed by pupils throughout the school. They have also inspired some wonderful artwork - see the pictures below!
