Year 1 Trip to the Epping Forest Museum - Toy Workshop

Posted on: 14th Nov 2022

In History, Year 1 have been learning all about toys. We have been thinking about our own favourite toys, the favourites of our parents and grandparents and we’ve learnt about toys from different decades. We have been comparing old and new and finding that there are both similarities and differences.

The Toy workshop at the Epping Forest Museum was an excellent opportunity to learn even more about toys from the past. We learnt about a little Victorian girl who lived in Leytonstone and by looking at her diaries and pictures from the past, we could understand more about toys from that time. We played with some of her toys, such as wooden stilts, a rocking horse and a hoop. We were even allowed to look at her china doll, which was so old, our museum guide could only handle it with gloves.

We looked at old drawings from the little girls diary, to spot clues about the games that she played and we even made some of our own paper toys - when we looked at flip books and zoetropes.

It was also great fun too be able to handle and play with some wooden toys, such as cup and ball, spinning tops, a Noah’s Ark and Jacobs Ladder.

The children were excellent learners and work hard all day. They did superb listening and are now definitely toy experts!
