Spotlight on Year 4

Posted on: 30th Apr 2024

This past week has been a fascinating journey for the Year 4 pupils. From exploring the secrets of sound, crafting Lego masterpieces at Legoland, to analysing and reflecting on the latest class book, 'Boy Overboard'.

In Science, Year 4 have been learning about “Sound”. After a Sound Walk around the school, listening for different sounds in different areas, they learned that sounds are produced by vibrations and that these vibrations travel from the source of the sound, through a variety of materials, to the ear. The children used musical instruments and household materials to investigate how the pitch and volume of a sound can be altered and finally investigated the best materials to absorb sounds.

The Year 4 trip to Legoland was a huge success. The children got the opportunity to experience a fun, hands-on and engaging workshop where they had to build and program their very own lego model. Certificates of achievement and badges were awarded.

They walked through miniland and saw the most iconic landmarks from across the world featuring nearly 40 million LEGO bricks. In Knights’ Kingdom, they boarded a magnificent LEGO dragon and travelled through a Medieval castle and over treetops. They got soaked by the pesky pirates as they made their way through the unchartered waters of the Pirate Falls, and they bravely ventured on Minifigure Speedway, the world's first LEGO themed duelling rollercoaster that not only races forward but also races in reverse!

As part of Guided Reading sessions, we have been reading Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. The children have enjoyed reading along and being read aloud to. They completed some comprehension questions to develop their retrieval and inference skills.

In addition to their weekly Vocabulary homework task, the children have been developing their language by creating, editing and using a Wonderful Words display.

Boy overboard is an exciting story about a refugee who escapes from a cruel government to go to Australia. It made me feel sympathetic towards refugees.

It makes me feel excited for what happens next, its an adventurous story and I like those.

Boy overboard is a sad, terrifying but happy ending story. I like the way it is connected to football!

I really enjoyed the book because I liked all the suspense. I loved the drama in it too.
