In the Spotlight - Art

Posted on: 22nd Jan 2024

Year 4's recent art project, inspired by their exploration of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' in English class, has been a delightful journey of creativity and skill development.

The project began with engaging sketching exercises, where the young artists honed their ability to distil figures into 2D shapes while paying careful attention to general proportions. Emphasis was placed on adopting a lighter pencil grip higher up the pencil to ensure a nuanced application of pressure.

To capture the dynamic essence of foxes in motion, children were provided with reference photographs depicting various activities like running, jumping, and pouncing. This exercise not only fuelled their imagination but also deepened their understanding of skeletal and muscle movements, crucial for illustrating motion convincingly.

Building on their posture sketches, students transitioned into the creation of miniature sculptures of foxes. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive style of artist Donna Parkhouse, the young artists brought their visions to life. To add a unique touch, the sculptures were adorned with pages from old copies of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' before receiving a delicate watercolour wash. The result is a collection of stunning, personalised fox models that showcase the students' dedication and developing artistic talents.
