In the Spotlight - Foundation Two
Posted on: 21st Nov 2023We're delighted to share the highlights of the past week in Foundation 2, where joy, creativity, and learning took centre stage. The theme for the week was 'Celebrations,' with a special emphasis on birthdays.
We began the week with a bang, dressing the classrooms with birthday banners and party tableware. The children were so excited and eagerly wrote birthday cards for 'Kipper’s Birthday,' our chosen text for the week. Of course, we all had to wear our party hats too!
The whole school joined together for Odd Sock Day, to show that it's okay to be different. Our teachers wore odd socks too. We had lots of fun comparing socks!
Tuesday brought regal festivities as we celebrated King Charles III's 75th birthday. The children engaged in creative activities, from crafting paper chains to writing thoughtful cards. Counting to 75 became an interactive lesson using Numicon, and we also created a repeating pattern using red, white and blue balloons.
Our newly introduced Role-Play areas sparked the children's imaginations. We have budding actors in the making! From Gruffalo characters with masks to running the 'Hot Chocolate Cafe,' the children embraced roles as actors, puppeteers, and even characters from the Diwali story. The play areas became vibrant hubs of creativity.
The children have been working hard this term to develop their fundamental movement skills. We have spent some time thinking about different ways we can move our bodies along with creative hand and foot patterns as we travel in, along, through and over various obstacles in the gym. This has involved us moving like big heavy bears, snappy angry crabs and tiny little mice. It has also been great to use the lovely red gym flooring as it allows for greater freedom of movement and it is ‘soft on Mrs Prince’s knees too!’
Developing our fundamental movement skills is an integral part of the children's physical literacy and our curriculum. Having ample time for this allows the pupils' confidence to grow organically and allows Mrs Prince to be able to help the children refine and address skills that need more focus; all working towards their development goals which will ensure continued progress as the children move into Year 1.
